Home & Living: declutter, organize and simplify your space
Sixteen guides covering everything from a first clear-out to moving somewhere smaller — written for homes you rent, share, or can’t renovate.
This section is about the gap between how a home is supposed to work and how it actually works — the drawer that won’t close, the chair where clothes go to wait, the cupboard nobody opens. Everything here assumes a real home with real constraints, not a photographed one.
Most home advice has a budget problem and an assumption problem. It assumes you own the place, that you can take out a wall, that a large storage system is a sensible answer to a cluttered hallway. Very little of it is written for rented flats, shared rooms, or homes where the only storage you’re getting is the storage you already have.
Every guide here has to pass the same three tests before it goes up: can you do it this week, does it work with what you already own, and has someone actually done it? That last one is why the time estimates say what they say. Where something doesn’t work, we say so — a fair amount of popular home advice is really just clutter relocation, or a product sold as a solution to a habit.
The guides below are ordered by where you are, not by category. If you’re starting from scratch, begin at the top and work down — the order matches the order the work happens in.

What’s next
Home & Living is the section we’re building first, and the one we’ll keep deepest. New guides go up as they’re written and tested, not on a schedule.
If something here didn’t work in your home, or there’s a guide you can’t find a straight answer to anywhere, the contact page explains where to send it — reader questions are where a good share of these came from.
